Does Cryptosteel Capsule Support Shamir Backup ?
Yes. Cryptosteel Capsule fully supports Shamir Backup (SLIP39), a cryptographic secret-sharing method developed by Adi Shamir.
Shamir Backup improves recovery seed security by splitting it into multiple independent shares. Only a predefined number of shares are required to recover the master seed, meaning no single share reveals your secret on its own.
Cryptosteel Capsule is designed to store these shares securely. Multi-Capsule packs support common setups such as 2-of-3 or 3-of-5 schemes, helping protect against theft, loss, coercion, or disasters while preserving long-term access to your crypto.
Is it safe to take Cryptosteel Capsules through the airport security ?
Yes. Cryptosteel Capsule contains no electronics and is made entirely from stainless steel, making it safe to carry through airport security.
Even if inspection is required, the stored information remains hidden and cannot be photographed or read. The Capsule functions as a secure storage device for sensitive information and complies with standard travel security requirements.
How to Correctly Use the Cryptosteel Capsule ?
When backing up a 24-word recovery seed phrase, you only need to store the first four letters of each word. This is because recovery seed standards (such as BIP39) ensure that the first four characters uniquely identify each word.
If you prefer to store full words, you will need to use a 12-word recovery seed phrase, as a 24-word seed will not fit in full-word form.

How to read your backup on the Cryptosteel Capsule ?
To access your backup:
Unscrew the Capsule to expose the core.
Slide each tile slightly to view the character and record it in order.
Do not remove the tiles completely — only slide them enough to read.
Once finished, securely reassemble the Capsule.
This method allows you to recover your information while keeping the tiles intact and your backup protected.
